oh so healthy

We are headed to Texas tomorrow, land of legends. My husband among them. On our way, we’ll pass through Waco, where we both spent our college years.

The last time we were there was November of 2009, when we were headed to the ranch for Thanksgiving with the entire clan. We found ourselves there at dinnertime, and we took full advantage of the opportunity to share a landmark of our Waco years with our children. Behold: The Health Camp.

Oh, the wittiness of whoever decided to call this place healthy.  It’s a dive with great greasy burgers and a juke box. The first time I went there, my new Texas friends insisted on playing me the classic, “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On.” Good thing there were milkshakes to ease my culture shock.

The Health Camp is located on a traffic circle. Yep – a traffic circle, in Waco. You can see the sign on the end that says “I survived the Circle.” If you’ve ever been there you know it’s even stranger than it sounds. When I think of traffic circles, I think of Europe. Of a civilized society where drivers yield to one another without the help of a traffic light.

That’s not exactly the scene in Waco, TX.

Who knows, we may stop for a burger tomorrow. Or maybe we’ll visit Vitek’s for a Gut Pack (yes, it’s really called that. And yes, it is out of this world.). On a side note – that website is way nicer than the actual restaurant could ever hope to be. It’s wood paneling inside of what looks to be an ancient gas station? corner store? who knows?

For sure we will stop for a float at the Dr. Pepper museum. Because we Joneses like to plan our trips around the things that really matter: onion rings, barbecue on top of Fritos, and sugary ice cold goodness that fizzes and tickles your nose.

  1. these are the things that help me survive my 3 semesters at BU and contributed to the fab freshman 15,  enjoy a float for me.       oh and btw  - must be a lot of baylor bears in chenal – seems to be several circles popping up out there. :)

  2. That is my kind of place.  Adding it to “the list.”

  3. The Dr. Peppers at the museum are made with pure cane sugar and not HFCF.  A difference worth a trip to The Great Republic.  No visit to Wacko is complete without a trip to the Texas Ranger Museum.
