song and dance man

Last week I went on a quick trip to Baylor for a little of this:

Oh, wait a minute, I’m not sure you can really see what I was getting at…

That, my friends, is the fabulous Bailey Eubanks, sophomore at Baylor University (my alma mater) and Sing Co-Chairman of his fraternity.  Isn’t he cute!

Sing is one of those things that most universities have some version of – a musical revue of sorts, with 7 minute acts performed by fraternities and sororities.  At Baylor, it’s taken on a life of it’s own, becoming a competition within the Greek system like no other (maybe because, well, there aren’t any others), where themes and costumes and dance moves become secrets guarded as though they will affect national security are plot spoilers for the next next episode of LOST. I could pause to comment on the ironic nature of the fact that this huge song and DANCE affair is so wildly popular at the world’s largest Baptist university, but I won’t.  Except I guess I just did.  And not very wittily, either.  This blogging every day is not giving me any time to come up with good lines, people.

The competition began last weekend and ends tonight in a couple of hours.  My sweet friend Rhonda is back in Waco again this weekend to see how it all turns out.  Of course, there’s a first, second, and third place – but the top 8 acts (out of 17) get to perform at Pigskin Revue next fall during Homecoming Weekend, and that’s the thing most acts are shooting for.  At about 11:00 pm tonight, the doors to Waco Hall will open, and hundreds of students will come running in to hear.

Bailey’s act was great – the most original and well-told story – and we’re wishing him all the best from the Jones’ house…

UPDATE:  They made it into Pigskin!  Good job, Bailey!
